Joining the

Rocky Mountain Chapter

Joining the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society (RMC-NARGS), is open to everyone who shares a common interest in rock gardening. The chapter has hundreds of members located in the Rocky Mountain region and across the US. We invite you to check out our chapter and hopefully you take an interest in joining us.

Rock Garden Plant Sales

The Rocky Mountain Chapter holds two plant sales, one in each the spring and fall. The rock garden plants at these sales are sourced from local growers and from chapter members. There is no better source of rock garden plants in the Rocky Mountain region! During the sale, expert growers and chapter members are available to answer questions and make recommendations.

Informative Lectures

At chapter meetings, the chapter often hosts experts in the fields of botany and rock gardenings to visit us and present to the membership. These presentations cover topics of interest to rock gardeners and provide the opportunity to learn about new research and related topics. Many presentations share knowledge and techniques in creating rock gardens. Speakers from outside the region bring new perspectives. After each presentation, the audience is given an opportunity to ask questions to further dive into a topic.

Saximontana Newsletter

The Saximontana newsletter is published by the Rocky Mountain Chapter eight to ten times a year. All members receive the newletter either electronically via this website or a paper copy can be mailed. The newsletter contains articles about rock gardening, tip and techniques, chapter news and the chapter calendar of events. The Saximontana newsletter is a great way to learn about rock gardens, new plants and stay connected with other rock gardeners.

When the weather and time of year is right, the chapter organizes rock garden tours, another opportunity to learn from the experts. Past garden tours have visited public botanical gardens where members are treated to being hosted by garden curators, horticulturists and get behind the scenes access to propagation areas and other things of interest.

The chapter members have great gardens too! Periodically, the chapter organizes tours of local rock gardens, or travels to another part of the region. Members see the art and techniques of growing rock garden plants. Members are proud of their gardens and are happy to share their experiences.

Botanical Hiking

Nature is the best teacher of rock gardening. The Rocky Mountain region offers some of the best outdoor alpine, subalpine and xeric botanic experiences with stunning scenery as the backdrop. And some hikes get your cardio going too! Well, we’re not going to tell you where our favorite fishing hole is. Nor are we going to share the location of our best backcountry powder stashes. The same for our wonderful wildflower hikes. The chapter has collected great amounts of hiking information along with plant lists which are available only to members on the RMC-NARGS.org website.

Volunteering

The Rocky Mountain Chapter is an all-volunteer organization. Our Chapter’s strengths are directly related to the efforts of our many volunteers. Chapter volunteering is:

  • a great way to give back to create a stronger rock garden society
  • developing new skills and learning new things
  • meeting new people and making friends
  • a lot of fun and can be rewarding in many ways
  • a way help reduce stress and improve your health

Social Activities and Mentoring

Chapter members love to give back and help others. Mentoring allows everybody to share ideas, stay up-to-date and learn from each other. All chapter activities are social in nature, and we love seeing and caring for each other. Meetings have social time where members can mingle and welcome new members. In the fall, the chapter hosts an annual banquet to celebrate the past year. An awards committee presents awards to members who have made significant contributions to the chapter.
