Rock Gardens Types

Different types and styles of rock gardens.

Alpine Garden

Alpines rock gardens are designed to replicate settings found in the mountains in the alpine and subalpine zones. These gardens can be simple mounds of soil free-standing or against a wall. Alpine gardens typically have small plants found in the high plains, plateaus and higher mountain altitudes. Carefully planned rock settings reflect the eye and style of the rock gardner.

Trough Garden

Trough gardens are small gardens planted in troughs or similar containers, often designed as artistic, miniature landscapes. Trough gardens are excellent environments for alpines that require well-drained soils. Perfect for small spaces, inner-city settings, patios and balconies, trough gardens add interest to small living spaces.

Crevice Garden

The Crevice gardens are characterized by tightly placed flat stones, often tucked on edge, into the side of a mount of soil. First seen and attributed to avid Czech gardeners. Tight verticle spaces formed are quick draining, but are good at holding onto moisture.  Just what some difficult-to-grow plants need.

Xeric Rock Garden

A xeric garden is a garden is designed for dry and semi-arid conditions. Plants in the xeric garden often have deep roots and have the ability to store water allowing them to tolerate dry conditions. Xeric garden soils are well-drained to prevent root rot and other conditions from over watering. Using succulents, cacti, grasses and wildflowers, a xeric garden bring beauty to dry landscapes.
