Mike Kintgen, Curator of the alpine collection at Denver Botanic Gardens, will give a tour of his favorite alpines  and share rock and xeric gardening tips.

Mike began volunteering in the Rock Alpine Garden at age 11 with Panayoti Kelaidis and officially joined the Denver Botanic Gardens staff in 2004. Mike holds a BS in Landscape Horticulture from Colorado State University and a Master’s degree in Alpine Ecology from Regis University in Denver.

Hymenxous grandiflora

His work focuses on high-elevation and steppe plants from around the world, with a recent emphasis on western North American flora. In 2020, he helped author the North American Botanic Garden Strategy for Alpine Plant Conservation (the Alpine Strategy). Mike has contributed to multiple books on alpine, steppe, and native plants, including peer-reviewing Plants With Altitude: Regionally Native Plants for Wyoming Gardens (University of Wyoming, 2014). A popular speaker, he has presented across North America, Europe, and Argentina.

Erigeron compositus

Mike will cover some of the best rock garden and xeric plants native to the wide-open landscapes of the West from the highest Mountains to the steppes and plains.   He will cover some well-known classics and show some lesser-known gems that deserve to be cultivated more.   He will touch on propagation and cultivations techniques.

We are excited to welcome Mike and to learn more about plants for our rock gardens.
